The Stone Sentinel is beckoning…

‘The Stone Sentinel’ is beckoning…

6, 962 meters…

11 days to trek…

-30 degrees at the summit…

The 1st adventure of 2013 begins, today! Feb 1st and boy am I ready!

Continuing my quest to conquer the Seven Summits, I move onto number 3 on my bucket list, Mount Aconcagua of South America. Standing 6,962m, Mt. Aconcagua forms the highest point of the Andes, which is the worlds longest mountain range.

A bit intimidating, but this provides the ultimate thrill. I couldn’t sleep last night, a million thoughts overload my mind like an African-taxi packed with passengers…am I ready?, have I packed correctly?, have I mentally prepared myself for what lies ahead?…

so I started re-reading the books and snippets of info about the trek:

“Mt. Aconcagua: The Colossus of America, so cold and special, so crude and dreamed of. It is precisely because of its weather that it is compared to the Himalayas. Not only snow and wind-storms are common in Mt. Aconcagua but also the feared electric storms, due to its geographical situation. Lightning bolts fall especially on the mountain peaks in the Northwest area and on the summit, making the stay and ascent difficult. … Approaching the summit in that moment would be deadly. When a storm approaches it is advisable to abandon the upper parts of the mountain.”

Needless to say, that passage didn’t put my mind at ease, but it did spark a desire to begin the accent and conquer ‘The Stone Sentinel’…

And all in the name of The Domino Foundation! Don’t forget to make a donation to the abandoned babies at The Domino Foundation Babies Home, the worthy recipient of all my fundraising endeavours.
